Cabin in Maine

Just bought a cabin in Maine, and I now own over two acres of land and have over 200 acres around us!

But I can't even grow a weed!

What can I grow in the woods of Maine? I have no experience or skill or luck when it comes to growing things. I live on a very wooded land with a small pond.

Deer Jerky and Sausage Sticks....
by: Krystal

Hi there,

I would like to turn some of this years deer meat into jerky and sausage sticks.

However, making these nitrate and sugar free?????

Do you have suggestions, or know of any farms that may do this?

Thanks,

Krystal

Growing a Garden in Maine
by: Sue Merriam

First of all, congratulations on your new purchase! Although the growing season is indeed shorter in Maine, you can still grow a good garden and grow many types of vegetables and fruits, including raspberries and blueberries.

Plus, there are several vegetables, including broccoli, peas and cabbage that actually thrive in the cooler temperatures.

But, since you do have a shorter growing season, you will definitely have to start many of your seeds inside. Invest in fluorescent lighting, and your plants will do just fine until it's time to transplant them outdoors.

Another way to grow lettuce and other greens in colder areas such as Maine is to use a cold frame. They are simple to construct and can be made pretty cheaply.
